About An Cliseam [Clisham]

True to its name—the origin of which is debated but potentially reflects a Norse or Gaelic root related to its shape—this peak served as a vital landmark for centuries, its ridges used by the Norse and later the clans for navigation and defense. Historically, it was part of the vast hunting grounds of the MacLeods of Harris, its ridges serving as vital lookouts over the strategic sea-lanes. Geologically, it is composed of Lewisian gneiss—the oldest rock in the British Isles—recording nearly 3 billion years of geological history. It remains a witness to the enduring traditions of exploration that define the Outer Hebrides, offering a quiet, uncompromised encounter with the wild spirit of the islands.
