An Dun Terrain Block

Rising as a spectacular, tiered bastion above the hidden waters of the Gaick Forest, An Dùn—the 'Fort'—is a mountain of exceptional presence and geological character. Located at the head of the Gaick Pass, its massive, broad-shouldered massif commands the entire northern reaches of the Drumochter interior. The mountain is defined by its incredible, glaciated eastern corries and sharp, rocky summit ridge which rises as a high bridge between the watery reaches of the south and the raw, uncompromised power of the central Highlands. From its airy summit, the view stretches across the flickering reaches of the central Highlands to the distant, serrated horizon of the Cairngorms. It is a place where the heritage of the wood and the ancient rock meet in a harmony of rugged highland drama, standing as a sentinel over the absolute remote.

About An Dun

True to its name—the 'Fort'—this peak reflects the architectural quality of its slopes, which can appear like giant battlements from the floor of the glen. Historically, it was part of the vast royal hunting grounds of the central Highlands, its lands historically part of the ancient ecclesiastical and military history of the region. Geologically, it is part of the Moine supergroup, its rocks recording millions of years of tectonic pressure, now evident in its folded rocks and sharp ridges. Today, it remains a peak of pilgrimage for walkers seeking the ultimate solitude, reachable only by long expeditions from the road-ends that preserve its status as a cornerstone of the Scottish wilderness.
