About An Ruadh-Stac

The name An Ruadh-Stac is a literal description of the deep ochre hue that its Torridonian sandstone takes on in the highland light. Historically, it has been one of the most remote mountains in the region, part of the ancient deer forests of Applecross and Coulin. Geologically, it is a perfect record of the region's complexity; its base is formed of billion-year-old sandstone, which is unconformably capped by the glittering quartzite of the 'Cambrian explosion' era. This contrast in rock and vegetation makes it one of the most distinctive and biologically rich mountains in the region, standing as a sanctuary for those seeking the true, rugged essence of the Torridonian wilderness.
