Arkle Terrain Block

Rising in a spectacular arc of white stone above the lonely waters of Loch Stack, Arkle is one of the most aesthetic and geologically fascinating mountains in the Northwest Highlands. Composed of Cambrian quartzite, its glittering twin summits are connected by a terrifyingly narrow 'knife-edge' ridge—as fine a feature as any found on the Munros. The mountain's northern peak resembles a massive, glaciated wave of rock, frozen in time and overlooking the vast, Neolithic landscape of Assynt and Sutherland. Arkle is a mountain of light and crystalline beauty, where the raw age of the earth is visible in every serrated ridge and deep, ice-carved corrie.

About Arkle

The name Arkle is thought to be of Old Norse origin, potentially derived from 'Ark-Fell' (Chest Hill) or referring to a legendary hero of the Reay Forest. Historically, the mountain has been a vital landmark for the Mackays and later the Dukes of Westminster, standing as the centrepiece of a landscape dedicated to deer stalking and wild preservation. Its geology is iconic; like its neighbour Foinaven, it consists of a base of Lewisian gneiss capped by a thick, glittering layer of quartzite that has resisted erosion for millions of years. It remains a place of profound wilderness, preserved by its remoteness and the rugged integrity of its ancient rock.
