Askival Terrain Block

Rising as an incredible, tiered bastion of dark gabbro and crystalline rock from the Atlantic, Askival is a mountain of exceptional geometry and geological character. As the highest peak on the Isle of Rùm, its sharp, rocky silhouette is a high bridge between the sea-lochs of the west and the raw, uncompromised power of the High Highlands. From its airy summit, the view stretches across the flickering reaches of the Atlantic to the distant, serrated horizon of the Isle of Skye and the Outer Hebrides. About Askival

The name Askival is of Norse origin, reflecting the Viking heritage of the islands, meaning potentially 'Ash Tree Mountain' or similar. Historically, it was part of the vast hunting grounds of the MacLeans of Coll and later the Bullough family, who built the nearby Kinloch Castle. Geologically, it is part of the Rùm Tertiary Igneous Centre, its gabbro and peridotite rocks recording the heart of an ancient volcano over 60 million years ago. It remains a witness to the enduring traditions of exploration that define the Hebrides, offering a quiet, uncompromised encounter with the wild spirit of the islands.
