Rising dramatically as a spectacular architectural bastion above the hidden reaches of Loch Maree, Beinn Airigh Charr—the 'Hill of the Summer Shieling'—is a mountain of exceptional geometry and extraordinary character. As one of the most prominent peaks in the Gairloch region, it dominates the entire northern reaches of the Ross-shire wilderness. From its airy summit, the view stretches across the flickering reaches of the Atlantic to the distant, serrated horizon of the Isle of Skye and the Outer Hebrides. About Beinn Airigh Charr

True to its name—the 'Hill of the Summer Shieling'—this peak reflects the ancient agricultural practices of the West Highlands, where livestock were moved to the high mountain pastures for the summer months. Historically, it was part of the vast royal hunting grounds of the Gairloch estates, its lands historically part of the ancient ecclesiastical and military history of the region. Geologically, it is composed of ancient Torridonian sandstone, its rocks recording nearly a billion years of geological history, subsequently carved into the world-class climbing terrain found today. It remains a witness to the enduring traditions of exploration that define the West Highlands, offering a quiet, uncompromised encounter with the wild spirit of the hills.
