Beinn Alligin - Sgùrr Mhòr Terrain Block

Sgùrr Mhòr is the higher of the two Munros on the magnificent Beinn Alligin, the 'Jewel of Torridon'. Its most famous feature is the deep gash of the 'Eag Dubh' (Black Cleft) on its southern face, a spectacular vertical rent in the mountain. The summit offers one of the finest panoramas in Scotland, looking out over the sea to Raasay and Skye, and inland to the white quartzite of Beinn Eighe.

Beinn Alligin means 'Mountain of Beauty' or 'Jewel Mountain', a perfect descriptor. The Eag Dubh is the subject of local folklore involving a shepherd who fell into it. The area is geologically ancient, formed of Torridonian sandstone that is some of the oldest rock in the world.
