The name Beinn an Eoin is thought to translate as the 'Hill of the Bird', potentially referring to the presence of golden eagles that haunt the high rock-realms. Historically, it has been part of the vast hunting grounds of the Flowerdale and Torridon estates. Geologically, it is a perfect laboratory of Northwest Highland geology; its base is formed of billion-year-old sandstone, which is unconformably capped by the glittering quartzite of the 'Cambrian explosion' era. This contrast in rock and vegetation makes it one of the most distinctive and biologically rich mountains in the region, standing as a sanctuary for those seeking the true, rugged essence of the Torridon wilderness.
