Beinn Damh Terrain Block

Rising in magnificent, tiered sandstone benches above the clear waters of Upper Loch Torridon, Beinn Damh is a mountain of profound character and arboreal beauty. While the nearby giants of Liathach and Beinn Alligin command the spotlight, Beinn Damh—the 'Hill of the Stag'—offers perhaps the most photogenic perspective of the Torridonian heartland. Its lower slopes are cloaked in a rare and ancient Caledonian pinewood, while its upper reaches are a landscape of rugged Torridonian sandstone capped by white Cambrian quartzite. The summit ridge is an airy and satisfying traverse, providing a grandstand view of the coastal shieldaig forests and the shimmering reaches of the Atlantic seaboard. It is a place where the heritage of the wood and the ancient rock meet in a harmony of rugged highland drama.

About Beinn Damh

Beinn Damh has been part of the Applecross and Torridon estates for centuries, its lands historically vital for the wild deer herds and the ancient highland clans. The pinewoods at its base, Coille Mhòr, are among the finest remnants of the original forest that once covered much of the Highlands. Geologically, the mountain is a perfect laboratory of Northwest Highland geology; its base is formed of billion-year-old sandstone, which is unconformably capped by the glittering quartzite of the 'Cambrian explosion' era. This contrast in rock and vegetation makes it one of the most distinctive and biologically rich mountains in the region, a sanctuary for both wildlife and those seeking the quiet soul of Torridon.
