Often considered the most beautiful mountain in the 'Great Wilderness', its twin-peaked silhouette of Torridonian sandstone rises in a series of shattered terraces above the remote waters of Loch na Sealga. The mountain's dark, rugged buttresses are a contrast to the glittering quartzite of its neighbour, Beinn a' Chlaidheimh, creating a landscape that feels almost Neolithic in its scale and power. Beinn Dearg Mòr—the 'Great Red Hill'—is a focal point of the Fisherfield Forest, an ancient deer forest that has remained one of Scotland's most remote regions. Historically, it was part of a landscape inhabited only by highland shepherds and hunters, its glens seeing little of the clearance drama that affected more accessible areas. Geologically, it is a spectacular example of Torridonian sandstone, its horizontal layers telling the story of a vast river system that flowed over a billion years ago. Today, it remains a place of profound silence, reachable only by long expeditions that preserve its status as a cornerstone of the Scottish wilderness.
