About Beinn Leoid

True to its name—the origin of which potentially refers to a Norse or Gaelic root related to its position—this peak served as a vital landmark for siglos, its ridges historically vital for the wild deer herds and the ancient highland clans. Historically, it was part of the vast royal hunting grounds of the Reay Forest, its lands historically part of the ancient ecclesiastical and military history of the region. Geologically, it is composed of Lewisian gneiss—the oldest rock in the British Isles—recording nearly 3 billion years of geological history. Today, it remains a peak of pilgrimage for those seeking a true encounter with the wild, untamed heritage of the North Highlands, requiring long approach through the hidden glens that ensures its summit remains a place of quiet, uncompromised highland silence.
