True to its name—the 'Big Grey Hill of the Fir Tree'—this peak reflects the ancient Caledonian forests that once reached deep into the glens below its slopes. Historically, its ridges were vital lookouts for the clans and later the military engineers mapping the strategic glens. Geologically, it is composed of metamorphic Moine rock, its forms smoothed by the massive ice sheets that once covered the entire central landscape. It remains a witness to the enduring traditions of travel and exploration that define the central Highlands, offering a quiet, uncompromised encounter with the wild spirit of the hills.
