Rising as a majestic, cone-like sentinel above the high village of Tyndrum, Beinn Odhar is a mountain of exceptional symmetry and strategic importance. Its name—the 'Dun-coloured Hill'—reflects the muted, earthy tones of its grassy and rocky slopes, which glow in the evening light of the southern Highlands. Often overshadowed by its massive neighbour, Beinn Dorain, Beinn Odhar possess a rugged character all its own, with steep, pathless slopes that offer a classic highland ascent. From its summit cairn, the view command the central railway line and the vast, watery wilderness of Rannoch Moor beyond, serving as a gateway between the lush glens of the Lowlands and the raw, untamed mountains of the north.

About Beinn Odhar

Beinn Odhar has served as a landmark for travellers for centuries, standing directly above the high pass that carries the West Highland Way and the ancient drove roads. Historically, it was a focal point for the early mining industry in Tyndrum, its slopes explored for the lead and silver veins that once promised riches to the highland clans. Geologically, it is composed of metamorphic Dalradian rock, its form sculpted by the powerful ice currents that once flowed through the Tyndrum gap. It remains a witness to the enduring traditions of travel and exploration that define the southern Highlands, offering a quiet, uncompromised encounter with the wild spirit of the hills.
