About Ben Nevis

The name 'Ben Nevis' comes from the Gaelic 'Beinn Nibheis', often translated as 'Mountain with its Head in the Clouds' or 'Venomous Mountain'. The summit observatory, built in 1883, was staffed permanently for 20 years, providing crucial meteorological data. The ruins of this observatory can still be seen today, a testament to Victorian scientific ambition in extreme conditions. The mountain is also home to the 'Old Man of Nevis', a rock formation that has watched over the glen for centuries.
