Breabag Terrain Block

Rising as an incredible, tiered bastion of Cambrian quartzite and Torridonian sandstone in the spectacular heart of Assynt, Breabag is a mountain of exceptional geometry and geological character. While its more famous neighbour Conival captures the Munro bagging trail, Breabag offers perhaps the most photogenic perspective of the entire Assynt interior. The mountain is defined by its massive, tiered quartzite pavement slabs and deep-cut limestone caves which reveal the billions of years of geological time etched into this ancient landscape. From its high, rolling summit plateau, the view stretches across the shimmering reaches of the Atlantic to the distant, serrated horizon of the Western Isles. It is a place where the heritage of the wood and the ancient rock meet in a harmony of rugged highland drama, standing as a sentinel over the absolute remote.

About Breabag

Breabag has for centuries been one of the most geologically significant mountains in the Highlands, part of the legendary North West Highlands Geopark. Historically, its lower slopes are home to the famous Bone Caves, where archaeological finds have recorded human and animal presence dating back over 40,000 years. Geologically, it is a perfect laboratory of the Moine Thrust; its structure is a complex sequence of crystalline Lewisian gneiss, Torridonian sandstone, and Cambrian quartzite, all records of the massive tectonic forces that shaped the Earth's crust. It remains a witness to the enduring traditions of exploration that define the Northwest Highlands, offering a quiet, uncompromised encounter with the wild spirit of the hills.
