Broad Law Terrain Block

Rising as a massive, broad-shouldered massif in the high heartland of the Southern Uplands, Broad Law is a mountain of profound horizontal scale and immense character. As the second highest peak in southern Scotland, it dominates the entire Tweeddale landscape, characterized by its vast, rolling expanses of weathered peat and hardy sub-arctic flora. While it lack the sharp precipices of the Highlands, its isolated position provides a unique perspective of the entire southern region, from the winding reaches of the River Tweed to the distant, serrated horizon of the Lake District and the Cheviots. From its height, the view is a masterclass in southern highland geography, looking out over a landscape of endless green horizons and shifting light. It is a place of profound solitude, standing as a high sentinel over the ancient, glaciated pathways of the southern forest.

About Broad Law

Broad Law has for centuries been a vital landmark for travellers and shepherds moving through the ancient border country. Historically, it was part of the vast hunting grounds and later the vital sheep-pastures of the Drumelzier and Tweeddale estates. In the 20th century, its strategic height and clear horizons led to the construction of a major radio beacon and weather station at its summit, making it one of the few high peaks in Scotland with a technological presence. Geologically, it is composed of sedimentary Silurian greywacke, its forms smoothed by the massive ice sheets that once covered the entire southern landscape. It remains a witness to the enduring traditions of travel and exploration that define the Southern Uplands, offering a quiet, uncompromised encounter with the wild spirit of the hills.
