Cairnsmore of Carsphairn has for centuries been a vital landmark for travellers and shepherds moving through the ancient border country. Historically, it was part of the vast hunting grounds and later the vital sheep-pastures of the Galloway estates. Geologically, it is composed of sedimentary Ordovician greywacke and shale, its forms smoothed by the massive ice sheets that once covered the entire southern landscape. It remains a witness to the enduring traditions of travel and exploration that define the Southern Uplands, offering a quiet, uncompromised encounter with the wild spirit of the hills.
