Rising as a massive, broad-shouldered massif in the high country of the Freevater Forest, Càrn Bàn—the 'White Cairn'—is a mountain of profound solitude and immensely scale. Occupying one of the most remote heartlands in the northern Highlands, it is a quintessential peak of the Ross-shire wilderness, characterized by its vast, rolling expanses of weathered peat, hardy sub-arctic flora, and shattered quartzite. While it lack the sharp precipices of the eastern ranges, its summit provides what many consider the most isolation and comprehensive view of the high northern interior, looking out over the winding reaches of the northern sea-lochs and the distant, dramatic peaks of the Sutherland giants. It is a place of endless horizons and shifting light, standing as a sentinel over the ancient, glaciated pathways of the northern forest.

About Carn Ban

True to its name—the 'White Cairn'—this peak reflects the glaciated boulders and shattered rock that define its summit plateau, which can appear white from a distance. Historically, it was part of the vast hunting grounds of the Freevater estate, its lands historically part of the ancient ecclesiastical and military history of the region. Geologically, it is composed of metamorphic Moine rock, its forms smoothed by the massive ice sheets that once covered the entire northern landscape. It remains a witness to the enduring traditions of travel and exploration that define the Sutherland Highlands, offering a quiet, uncompromised encounter with the wild spirit of the hills.
