About Carn Dearg

True to its name—the 'Red Cairn'—this peak reflects the iron-tinged shattered rock and weathered peat that define its expansive summit plateau. Historically, it was a focal point of the vast hunting grounds of the eastern Grampians, its lands historically part of the ancient ecclesiastical and military history of the region. Geologically, it is composed of metamorphic Dalradian rock, its forms smoothed by the massive ice sheets that once covered the entire central landscape. It remains a witness to the enduring traditions of travel and exploration that define the central Highlands, offering a quiet, uncompromised encounter with the wild spirit of the hills.
