Cul Mor Terrain Block

Rising as an incredible, tiered bastion of Torridonian sandstone in the spectacular heart of Assynt, Cùl Mòr is a mountain of exceptional geometry and geological character. While its more famous neighbour Stac Pollaidh captures the tourist trail, Cùl Mòr—the 'Great Back'—offers perhaps the most photogenic perspective of the entire Coigach and Assynt heartland. The mountain is defined by its massive, tiered sandstone terraces and deep-cut corries which reveal the billions of years of geological time etched into this ancient landscape. From its high, rolling summit plateau, the view stretches across the shimmering reaches of the Atlantic to the distant, serrated horizon of the Outer Hebrides. It is a place where the heritage of the wood and the ancient rock meet in a harmony of rugged highland drama, standing as a sentinel over the absolute remote.

About Cul Mor

Cùl Mòr has for centuries been one of the most remote mountains in the Highlands, part of the ancient deer forests of the Sutherland estates. Historically, it was a focal point for the early communities that lived in the hidden glens, its ridges serving as vital lookouts over the lochs during the era of the Highland Clearances. Geologically, it is a perfect laboratory of Northwest Highland geology; its base is formed of billion-year-old sandstone, which is unconformably capped by the glittering white moves of Cambrian quartzite. This contrast in rock and vegetation makes it one of the most distinctive and biologically rich mountains in the region, standing as a sanctuary for those seeking the true, rugged essence of the Scottish wilderness.
