Fuar Tholl Terrain Block

Fuar Tholl—the 'Cold Hollow'—is a mountain of dramatic verticality and extraordinary geological contrast. Rising above the remote glens of Achnashellach, it is defined by the massive, towering slabs of its Mainreachan Buttress, one of the most spectacular sandstone precipices in the Highlands. Its summit, however, is a contrasting cap of white Cambrian quartzite, creating a sharp, crystalline crest that overlooks the wild interior of Strathcarron. The mountain is a multi-dimensional masterpiece, where the deep-cut corries and sheer sandstone faces provide a grandstand view of the nearby Munros of Sgùrr Ruadh and Beinn Liath Mhòr. It is a place of raw, alpine character, standing as a sentinel over the ancient, glaciated pathways of Wester Ross.

About Fuar Tholl

The name Fuar Tholl refers to the deep, shadowed corrie on its northern face that retains snow and cold winds long into the spring. Historically, the mountain has been a vital landmark for travellers and hunters using the old stalking paths that wind through the Achnashellach forest. Its geology is a perfect record of the region's complexity; the base is formed from billion-year-old Torridonian sandstone, while the summit is a younger, half-billion-year-old quartzite. This juxtaposition of ancient rock types, sculpted by the last ice age into sheer cliffs and sharp ridges, makes it a focal point for both geologists and mountaineers seeking the rugged soul of the northwest.
