Garbh-bheinn Terrain Block

Rising as an incredible, tiered bastion of dark gabbro and crystalline rock from the Atlantic, Garbh-bheinn—the 'Rough Hill'—is a mountain of exceptional geometry and extraordinary character. As one of the most prominent peaks in the Skye Cuillin region, it dominates the entire northern reaches of the island. The mountain is defined by its massive, glaciated gabbro buttresses and sharp, rocky summit ridge which rises as a high bridge between the sea-lochs of the west and the raw, uncompromised power of the high mountains. From its airy summit, the view stretches across the flickering reaches of the Atlantic to the distant, serrated horizon of the Outer Hebrides. It is a place of raw, uncompromised beauty, standing as a sentinel over the ancient, glaciated pathways of the western forest.

About Garbh-bheinn

True to its name—the 'Rough Hill'—this mountain served as a vital landmark for centuries, its ridges used by the Norse and later the clans for navigation and defense. Historically, it was part of the vast hunting grounds of the Clan MacLeod and Clan MacDonald, its ridges serving as vital lookouts over the strategic sea-lanes. Geologically, it is part of the Skye Tertiary Igneous Centre, its gabbro and peridotite rocks recording the heart of an ancient volcano over 60 million years ago. It remains a witness to the enduring traditions of exploration that define the Isle of Skye, offering a quiet, uncompromised encounter with the wild spirit of the islands.
