True to its name—the 'Great White Cairn'—this peak reflects the glaciated boulders and shattered rock that define its summit plateau. Historically, it was a focal point of the vast hunting grounds of the eastern Grampians, its lands historically part of the ancient ecclesiastical and military history of the region. The approach via the 'Burma Road'—a rugged track built across the pass—adds to its historical character as a mountain of transit and travel. Geologically, it is composed of metamorphic Dalradian rock, its forms smoothed by the massive ice sheets that once covered the entire central landscape.
