About Glamaig - Sgurr Mhairi

True to its name—Glamaig (reflecting its position or architectural shape)—this peak served as a vital landmark for centuries, its ridges used by the Norse and later the clans for navigation and defense. Historically, it is famous for the 'Glamaig Hill Race', a feat of extreme physical endurance that dates back to the 19th century when the Gurkha, Harkabir Thapa, ran from Sligachan to the summit and back in record time. Geologically, it is part of the Skye Tertiary Igneous Centre, its pink granite rocks recording the heart of an ancient volcano over 60 million years ago. It remains a witness to the enduring traditions of exploration that define the Isle of Skye, offering a quiet, uncompromised encounter with the wild spirit of the islands.
