About Meall Horn

True to its name—the origin of which potentially refers to its architectural shape—this peak has for centuries been part of the vast royal hunting grounds of the Reay Forest, its lands historically vital for the wild deer herds and the ancient highland clans. Historically, its ridges were vital lookouts for the clans and later the military engineers mapping the strategic glens. Geologically, it is composed of Lewisian gneiss—the oldest rock in the British Isles—recording nearly 3 billion years of geological history. Today, it remains a peak of pilgrimage for those seeking a true encounter with the wild, untamed heritage of the North Highlands, requiring long approach through the hidden glens that ensures its summit remains a place of quiet, uncompromised highland silence.
