Merrick Terrain Block

Deep in the heart of the Galloway Forest Park, the Merrick stands as the majestic sovereign of southern Scotland. As the highest peak in the Southern Uplands, it anchors the 'Range of the Awful Hand', a ridge of five hills said to resemble the fingers of a buried titan. The mountain is a geological treasure composed of ancient Greywacke sandstone, sculpted by ice into dramatic corries like the Howe of the Caldron. Its summit offers a breathtaking perspective that stretches from the Firth of Clyde and the Ailsa Craig to the distant coastline of Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man. About Merrick

The Merrick's history is a tapestry of royal refuge and religious defiance. Following his defeat at Methven, Robert the Bruce sought safety in these remote Galloway Hills, and his victory at the nearby Loch Trool is commemorated by Bruce’s Stone. In the 17th century, the mountain's hidden corries provided a sanctuary for Covenanters fleeing the 'Killing Times'. Most famous of its landmarks is the 'Grey Man of the Merrick', a natural rock profile on the Rig of the Gloon that has watched over these hills for millennia, inspiring local legends of a guardian giant protecting the Galloway heartland.
