Monamenach Terrain Block

Rising as a massive, broad-shouldered massif above the high glens of the Angus Glens, Monamenach is a mountain of profound horizontal scale and immense character. Occupying a high heartland on the border between Angus and Perthshire, it is a quintessential peak of the Mounth interior, characterized by its vast, rolling expanses of weathered peat and hardy sub-arctic flora. While it lack the sharp precipices of the western ranges, its isolated position provides a unique perspective of the entire southern Grampians, looking out over the winding reaches of Glen Isla and the distant, dramatic peaks of the Cairngorms. From its height, the view is a masterclass in eastern highland geography, looking out over a landscape of endless horizons and shifting light. It is a place of profound solitude, standing as a high sentinel over the ancient, glaciated pathways of the eastern forest.

About Monamenach

True to its name—the origin of which is debated but potentially refers to the 'Hill of the Monks' or similar—this peak has for centuries been part of the vast hunting grounds of the eastern Grampians. Historically, its ridges were vital lookouts for the hunters and later the stalkers who maintained this landscape for red deer. Geologically, it is composed of metamorphic Dalradian rock, its forms smoothed by the massive ice sheets that once covered the entire central landscape. It remains a witness to the enduring traditions of travel and exploration that define the southern Highlands, offering a quiet, uncompromised encounter with the wild spirit of the hills.
