Quinag - Sail Gharbh Terrain Block

Sàil Gharbh—the 'Rough Heel'—is the northern and loftiest bastion of the spectacular Quinag massif in Assynt. Standing at 808 metres, it offers a dramatic perspective of the mountain's complex Y-shaped ridgeline, where steep buttresses of Torridonian sandstone fall away into deep, glacial corries. The ascent crosses a landscape of ancient rock and sub-arctic flora, reaching a summit of weathered Cambrian quartzite that overlooks the winding reach of Loch a' Chairn Bhain and the distant Atlantic horizon. It is a place of raw, uncompromised beauty, where the power of geological time is visible in every serrated ridge and deep-cut corrie, standing as a rugged sentinel over the northern reaches of Sutherland.

About Quinag - Sail Gharbh

The name Sàil Gharbh reflects the rugged, uncompromising nature of the peak's northern slopes. It has seen the passage of time on a scale few other places can match, with its base of Lewisian gneiss forming the very foundation of the European continent. Since 2005, the mountain has been part of the John Muir Trust's Quinag estate, managed to restore its wild character and protect its unique biodiversity. It remains a focal point for those seeking a true encounter with the prehistoric spirit of the Northwest Highlands.
