Stob Dubh—the 'Black Peak'—is a link to the ancient ecclesiastical and military history of Glen Coe, its ridges serving as vital lookouts over the strategic route of the Great Pass of Glencoe. Historically, it was part of the vast royal hunting forests and later the lands of the MacDonalds of Glencoe, where its ridges served as vital lookouts during the era of clan warfare. Geologically, it lies near the Glencoe Cauldron, its rocks recording the violent volcanic activity that once shaped this entire landscape over 400 million years ago. Today, it remains a favorite for walkers seeking a true alpine traverse, offering a sense of seclusion and elevation that exceeds its sub-3,000-foot stature.
